Welcome to F2

At St. Matthew's we work hard to give our children a warm and supportive environment where are youngest children are able to feel confident, cared for and learn. We provide a balance of play-based and structured learning to help our children develop early skills in reading, writing, mathematics, communication and social and emotional skills. We promote high expectations for all our pupils and encourage them to be independent learners and thinkers.

Our Foundation Stage Unit consists of carefully planned provision to cater for all children at all stages of their development. At St Matthew's we believe that children learn best through play that is interesting and engaging and therefore our learning environment plays a key role in supporting this. Our team of teachers and teaching assistants work hard to build strong relationships with all of our children to help provide a safe and stimulating environment where our children are given the best possible chance to thrive.

Our Daily Routine in F2

In F2 our day begins with children, parents and carers being warmly welcomed into our Foundation Stage Unit by our staff members. Children are able to enjoy free play activities to start their day before taking part in their daily phonics session following our scheme Read Write Inc. Each day will consist of four different carpets sessions which include mathematics, literacy, Understanding the World, collective worship, RE and social and emotional well-being. Children take part in weekly PE lessons as well as sessions that allow for sharing news from home and events going on in their lives. During free play time children have access to a variety areas of provision both indoors and outdoors which include areas such as malleable, construction, mark making, role-play, fine motor sand and water play which allow children to access all areas of the EYFS curriculum.

Take a look at the document below for how you can help ensure your child is as well prepared as possible to begin Reception.

Our class Saint is St Francis of Assis (1181 - 1226). St Francis is renowned for his dedication to poverty and simplicity as well as his love of nature; in particular animals. In Foundation Stage we work hard to learn about how we can show our love for God by caring for his World and the living things on it. We use the example that St Francis has set for us to help inspire our children to live a life of faith, service and compassion. We celebrate St Francis' feast day together in school on 4th October.

 Phonics

At St Matthew's we follow Read Write Inc. for our phonics scheme to help children learn to read and write. We teach daily phonics sessions and this is a huge part of their learning during reception. Please read the document bellow to find out how best you can support your child in their reading and writing journey. There is also a link that will show you how we teach our children to say the sounds so you can support this better at home.
