Welcome to F1

At St Matthew's we work hard to ensure our nursery children have a happy and settled start to their school life. Staff in our Foundation Stage unit work hard to establish consistent routines for our youngest children so they can feel safe and secure to play, explore and take risks in their learning. We focus on laying the foundations for the characteristics of learning which focus on how a child learns rather than what they are learning. These encourage children to remain motivated in their play, think critically, problem solve and build resilience, all key skills in promoting successful learner as they move through school and life.

Our Foundation Stage unit provides children with opportunities to explore all areas of the early years curriculum through our carefully planned provision. Our classroom environment consists of learning areas both indoors and outdoors including fine motor, malleable, role-play, reading area, sand and water play all of which our nursery children are free to explore during their time with us.

We currently offer three nursery sessions each school day:

-Morning nursey session 8.50am - 11.50am

-Afternoon nursery session 12.15am - 3.15pm

-Full day session 8.50am - 3.15pm

Our class Saint is St Francis of Assis (1181-1226). St Francis is renowned for his dedication to poverty and simplicity as well as his love of nature; in particular animals. In Foundation Stage we work hard to learn how we can show our love for God by caring about his world and the living things on it. We use the example that St Francis has set for us to help inspire our children to live a life of faith, service and compassion. We celebrate St Francis' feast day together in school on 4th October.

Phonics

In F1 children will engage in daily phonics sessions which include rhyming games, singing, listening for environmental sounds and sharing stories. These sessions help children to develop their ability to hear, develop and use sounds in words which in turn leads to them gaining greater phonological awareness. Through phonics activities they are also learning to develop speaking and listening skills, expand their vocabulary and gain confidence in recognising letter sounds. This is vital learning for your child to ensure they are prepared to start our more formal phonics sessions as they move into F2. You can help support your child with this area of development at home by engaging in songs and rhymes with them and also sharing daily stories, bedtime is often a great opportunity for this to take place. Please see below a document to help support you on how you can get the best out of story time with your child.
